2010: YEAR OF THE RIVANNA

Virginia’s Scenic Rivers Program turns 40 in 2010 and it’s time to celebrate because the Rivanna River was the very first river to be designated as scenic. The first section to be designated was the mainstem from Fluvanna to the confluence with the James River. The second section from Woolen Mills Dam down to the Fluvanna section. And, with the breaching of the Woolen Mills Dam in 2007, the remaining segments were added in 2009 completing the designation for the entire mainsteam of the Rivanna River.  In addition, the Moormans River, a tributary of the Rivanna, has also been designated as a State Scenic River.

A group of Rivanna Watershed Partners have joined together to design and implement celebratory and educational events to highlight the importance of the Rivanna River and its scenic river designation. During the Year of the Rivanna the Partners will plan and promote events/activities that celebrate the Rivanna and its scenic beauty. In addition, the Partners will sponsor new multi-organizational events to raise public awareness and directly engage the community in the care and protection of the Rivanna River and its tributaries. The Rivanna Conservation Society is facilitating The Year of the Rivanna.
